Despite his differences with UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones can’t see himself picking against the titleholder to drop the crown at UFC 206 this December.
When asked on Twitter to predict who would be victorious in Cormier’s upcoming 205-pound title defense against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, Jones sided with “DC” based on his more well-rounded skill-set.
UFC 206 marks the second time Cormier and Johnson will share the cage, having first met at UFC 187 in May 2015. After surviving an early onslaught from the power puncher, Cormier managed to outgrapple and tire his opponent into a third-round submission.
Cormier went on to defend his title once more against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192 before defeating Anderson Silva in a non-title fight at UFC 200. He was originally scheduled to meet Jones at the July pay-per-view, only to have plans changed just three days prior after “Bones” was flagged by USADA for a failed drug test.
It would have been the second time Jones and Cormier met, meeting back at UFC 182 in a January 2015 fight that saw Jones earn a unanimous decision victory over the former Olympian.
There is no word on when Jones may return to the cage, but he has his arbitration hearing with USADA scheduled for Oct. 31.
Johnson, meanwhile, has gone 3-0 with three straight knockouts over Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira since losing to Cormier. He was originally scheduled to meet Jones at UFC 187, but wound up facing “DC” for the vacant title after Jones was suspended and stripped of the title for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident in early 2015.
