Originally scheduled to face Marcin Tybura in the co-main event at UFC Fight Night Manila on Oct. 15, Derrick Lewis now faces Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC Fight Night 102 — headlining the UFC’s second card in the state of New York.
The news was announced by the UFC Friday evening.
Lewis comes into the bout riding a four-fight winning streak, most recently getting the split-decision nod over Roy Nelson at UFC Fight Night 90. A fast-rising knockout artist in the UFC’s heavyweight division, “The Black Beast” has stopped three of his last four opponents via knockout or TKO. What’s more, 14 of his 16 victories have come via knockout or TKO.
A veteran mixed martial artist hailing from Russia, Abdurakhimov is 17-3 as a pro mixed martial artist. The 35-year-old Dagestan fighter last fought at UFC Fight Night 96 in early October, defeating Walt Harris via split decision. It was his second win in as many fights, defeating Anthony Hamilton to earn his first victory inside the Octagon after failing to win in his debut in 2015.
The UFC also announced a co-main event between fellow rising heavyweights Francis Ngannou and Anthony Hamilton.
A heavy-hitting striker standing at 6-foot-4, Ngannou has stopped all eight of his opponents in MMA competition. The 30-year-old Frenchman, currently rides a seven-fight winning streak, and has stopped all four of his past opponents via knockout or TKO.
Hamilton last fought at UFC 201 in July, stopping Damian Grabowski via knockout in 14 seconds.
