Miocic-Arlovski Set for UFC 195 Co-Main Event

Even MMA has its silver linings.

Irish fight fans may have lost out on an opportunity to catch Stipe Miocic duke it out with Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 76, but  they’ll at least get to watch a televised matchup between Miocic and fellow top heavyweight contender Andrei Arlovski during the co-main event at UFC 195 on Jan. 2

The fight agreement was first reported by the Los Angeles Times.

Both fighters were speculated to receive a title shot against newly crowned heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum after he defeated Cain Velasquez. Neither man was afforded the opportunity, however, seeing as the UFC decided to give the former champion a chance to regain the crown he lost at UFC 188 in June.

Once they were taken out of the title conversation, many an MMA fan speculated the streaking heavyweights were destined to clash with one another inside the Octagon, thus allowing the UFC to determine the next heavyweight contender. Only that didn’t happen, either; Arlovski would go on to face Frank Mir at UFC 191 and Miocic would be scheduled against Rothwell two months later.

A victory against Mir would send Arlovski’s winning streak to six — a winning streak he’ll bring in against Miocic, who’s won four of his last five. That lone loss came in a razor-close unanimous decision against former champion Junior dos Santos last December.

The heavyweight clash is set to take place just before the main event — a five-round title affair between welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and former interim champion Carlos Condit.
