Ben Askren: CM Punk’s Critics are Jealous

CM Punk UFC MMA

CM Punk made a wise choice when joining Roufusport Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Milwaukee.

He’s got  Duke Roufus who can help shape him into the fighter he needs to be come time for his debut. He’s got Anthony Pettis who can help him prepare for the fame that comes associated with being a popular fighter inside the Octagon. He’s also got Ben Askren who, in addition to all of the combat knowledge the undefeated fighter brings to the table, cane help prepare Punk for all of the critics.

One of the most polarizing figures in the sport of mixed martial arts, Askren knows a thing or two about dealing never-ending criticism. In fact, he’s got a pretty good guess as to why Punk’s at the center of a heated debate.

“Maybe jealousy,” Askren said to MMAFighting. “I would guess that’s a pretty good answer. He’s been famous, he’s made a lot of money, he’s got a hot wife. There’s a lot of things about him that people would probably be jealous of. I would guess that’s it.”

Only that, if you look at the bigger picture, focusing on Askren’s history as a fighter who’s never seen eye to eye with UFC President Dana White, you might question if “Funky” Ben was ever jealous himself.

He understands how people may think he was being disrespectful toward his new teammate, but he says that’s not the case.

“The point was never really directed at him. It was more Dana White, because at that point in time the reason he was trying to express to the fans why he didn’t sign me, which was untrue, was that I didn’t have enough experience,” Askren said. “You tell a guy who’s an Olympian and is 12-0 and ranked top-10 in the world in mixed martial arts he doesn’t have enough experience to compete in the UFC and then you turn around and sign a guy who’s never fought before, well you just contradicted yourself.”

Askren takes on Luis Santos for the second straight time as he looks to defend his welterweight title at ONE Championship: Pride of Lions on Nov. 13.
