A featherweight bout between Dennis Bermudez and Maximo Blanco scheduled for UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston has been scrapped, after the former reportedly suffered a staph infection on his shin, per MMAFighting.
The Jan. 17 contest would have been Bermudez’s latest attempt to get back to his winning ways inside of the Octagon. The Ultimate Fighter 14 runner-up was the author of a seven-fight winning streak from 2012-14, defeating the likes of No. 5-ranked Max Holloway and No. 14 Clay Guida. His streak would come to an end, however, after running into former title contender and No. 4-ranked featherweight Ricardo Lamas at UFC 180 in Mexico City last November. His losing streak would extend to two after dropping a third-round TKO to Jeremy Stephens, which was competed at a catchweight of 149.5 pounds after Stephens failed to make weight for the second consecutive contest.
Blanco, on the other hand, was looking to extend his winning streak to four in Boston. A three-year UFC veteran, Blanco most recently defeated Mike de la Torre in 16 seconds at The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale in July. He has victories over Andy Ogle, Sam Sicilia and Daniel Hooker while competing for the UFC.
There is no word on whether Blanco will remain on the card.
Headlining the event in Boston is a bantamweight title match between champion T.J. Dillashaw and former titleholder Dominick Cruz, as the former champion makes his return to the Octagon for just the second time in four years. Also featured on the card is a heavyweight clash between Travis Browne and former TUF alum Matt Mitrione.
