Invicta FC’s newly crowned strawweight champion will have to wait just a bit longer to defend her gold for the first time, champion Livia Renata Souza tells MMAFighting.
Souza was slotted to face off against rising strawweight contender Alexa Grasso at Invicta FC 15, Invicta President Shannon Knapp announced during the post-fight media conference at Invicta FC 14 in September. An official date was not announced, but the bout was originally said to take place sometime in November.
The champion claims the event was scheduled for Dec. 5, but sources tell MMAFighting it won’t happen before January 2016.
Souza and Grasso were originally scheduled to face off in September, but Grasso pulled out of that fight due to injury. It seems the injury bug has struck the undefeated Mexican fighter once more.
“Yeah, she ran from the fight again,” Souza said to MMAFighting. “She’s hurt, can’t fight at Invicta FC 15 on Dec. 5. She’s injured again, but keeps posting pictures of training, so it’s complicated.”
The champion says she isn’t necessarily questioning Grasso’s character, believing that she’s truly injured. She’s only upset that it keeps happening again, seeing as she had some lofty goals for her fighting career in the relatively near future.
“I wanted to stay active, fight one more time, and then go to the UFC as the champion,” she said. “That’s my personal wish, to fight one more time at Invicta and then go to the UFC, but it’s not up to me. I believe my next logical step is the UFC, especially because there aren’t many good Brazilian strawweights in the UFC, except for Claudia Gadelha, and I have what it takes to be there.”
