John Lineker has secured his second fight at 135 pounds, and it comes against another opponent who may be willing to stand and trade with the man otherwise known as “Hands of Stone.”
Team Alpha Male’s Cody Garbrandt meets Lineker in a three-round affair at UFC Fight Night 82 at the Console Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a rare Sunday card on Feb. 21, the promotion announced Monday.
Lineker will be five months removed from a first-round submission victory over Francisco Rivera in what could be considered MMA’s most exciting round of 2015. Known for his punching power, Lineker charged forward as game Rivera was more than willing to exchange. It backfired for Rivera, who got caught with one too many punches that subsequently opened him up to the guillotine choke. That was Lineker’s first bantamweight contest in the UFC; he’d previously competed at 125 pounds, where he notoriously struggled to make weight. He has not lost since February 2014, in a three-round unanimous decision to Ali Bagautinov.
His opponent, Garbrandt, has gone an undefeated 7-0 since making his pro debut in 2012. He most recently defeated Enrique Briones at UFC 189 via unanimous decision. A highly regarded teammate to Urijah Faber and Chad Mendes in Sacramento, “No Love” first made his UFC debut against Marcus Brimage in January.
They hold 20 knockout victories between them.
Also featured on the card is a women’s bantamweight matchup between former Invicta FC 135-pound champion Lauren Murphy and Sarah “Cheesecake” Moras.
A main event matchup has not been announced for the card.
