Paige VanZant, who recently signed a new deal with the UFC, has her next fight lined up. It’s a good one.
Despite being called out by the strawweight division’s seventh-ranked fighter Randa Markos, VanZant gets eighth-ranked Joanne Calderwood, according ESPN.
The bout between two of the 115-pound division’s top fighters headlines the first of three cards on three consecutive nights for the UFC on Dec. 10. Not only that, but it also serves as a step up in competition for VanZant, whose last two fights came against No. 13 Felice Herrig and un-ranked Alex Chambers.
Seen as a favorite in the 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter, Calderwood last fought in her hometown of Glasgow, Scotland, earning a unanimous decision against Cortney Casey in July.
Outside of an inaugural title fight between ex-champion Carla Esparza and Rose Namajunas at the TUF 20 finale and a title fight between current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Penne, VanZant vs. Calderwood serves as just the third women’s strawweight bout to headline a UFC event.
Also featured on the card is a lightweight showdown between Jim Miller and Michael Chiesa. Both fighters are coming off of victories in their last time out, with Miller and Chiesa defeating Danny Castillo and Mitch Clarke, respectively.
